When you grow up, what do you want to be? I think we have all asked this question in our lives, not only to ourselves but to others as well. And yet, we should be asking the question, “Who does God want me to be when I grow up?”
Who Am I?
We live in a world in which culture has defined the belief system as well as our value system. Studies show that culture has influenced how we think, what we eat, and how we dress. While we know that we can’t control culture, how do we live and function in the culture and not be changed by it?
The good news is that we are not the first generation of Christians that has faced this problem. From the beginning of time, God’s people have found themselves in a cultural battle of good vs. evil— and the greatest news of all is that Christ has won our battles! His Word promises that if we submit ourselves to God and resist the enemy, that he will flee (James 4:7).
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:6-7
The enemy has used the words of others to form our opinion of who we are, and it is contrary to who the Word of God says that we are. Yet for most, they have never searched out who God says they are and continue to function out of what others have said. They have believed the lies of the enemy and are paralyzed in that place. It seems unnatural to believe great things about ourselves, yet the greatness of Christ resides within us. However, the enemy wants us to think beneath our capacity and keep us from the place where our thoughts remain on the goodness of God and His ability to cause greatness in us through His righteousness.
Who does the Word Of God Say That I Am?
1. I AM A CHILD OF GOD: I belong to Him and He guards and protects me.
“For you [who are born-again have been reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified and] are all children of God [set apart for His purpose with full rights and privileges] through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ [into a spiritual union with the Christ, the Anointed] have clothed yourselves with Christ [that is, you have taken on His characteristics and values]. There is [now no distinction in regard to salvation] neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you [who believe] are all one in Christ Jesus [no one can claim a spiritual superiority]. And if you belong to Christ [if you are in Him], then you are Abraham’s descendants, and [spiritual] heirs according to [God’s] promise.” Galatians 3:26-29 (AMP)
“Therefore you are no longer a slave (bond-servant), but a son; and if a son, then also an heir through [the gracious act of] God [through Christ].” Galatians 4:7
2. I AM LOVED: In a world filled with so much hate, I am loved with an unconditional love that will never fade.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16
3. I AM HIS: Nothing can separate me from His great love.
“So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God’s chosen? Who would dare even to point a finger? The One who died for us—who was raised to life for us! —is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture.” Romans 8:31-39 (The Message)
4. I AM WORTHY AND FEARLESS: He shows His great love and my fears diminish.
“For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Zephaniah 3:1
5. I AM PURPOSED: There is a divine plan for me.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land.” Jeremiah 29:11-14
6. I AM ADORED: He thinks of me with tender love and mercies.
“How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!” Psalm 139:17-18
7. I AM FORGIVEN: My sins have been washed away. No longer do I have to live in the shame and regret of past sins.
“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.” Romans 3:23-25
8. I AM A NEW CREATION IN CHRIST: I don’t have to live in the past.
“So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now! This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” 2 Corinthians 5:16-17
9. I AM SET FREE: Nothing in this life can hold me captive.
“And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.” Romans 8:2
10. I AM VICTORIOUS
“Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.” Ephesians 6:13
When you truly know who you are in Christ, there is nothing that will ever be able to conquer you and you will impact this world for His Kingdom! So be strong, be courageous and go change the world. To God be the Glory!
